Module 2

Developing and Strengthening Your Parent-Child Relationship

Every relationship has its ups and downs. As a parent, it is important to ensure your child feels loved and accepted for who they are no matter what.

In this module, you will learn how you can build a strong relationship and communicate well with your child, both of which are important foundations of parenting.

Topics include:

2A

Providing your child with warmth and acceptance

2B

Promoting open communication between you and your child

2C

Recognising your own and your child’s feelings

Providing your child with warmth and acceptance

As a parent, you can show your child you love and accept them for who they are by providing them with unconditional warmth and acceptance. There is no single right or wrong way of doing so, as long as they can feel the care and affection that you have for them.

Promoting open communication between you and your child

Good communication is the key to strengthening your parent-child bond and increasing the level of trust between you and your child. It helps your child feel safe at home and builds the foundation for open discussions on a variety of topics. This in turn increases the likelihood of them opening up to you in the future, especially during difficult times.

The best conversations can happen when you spend time naturally with your child throughout the day such as during mealtimes, while travelling to and from school, or when playing games together.

Recognising your own and your child's feelings

As your child grows, they will experience increasingly complex feelings. As a parent, you play a big role in guiding your child to navigate these feelings and building their skills to manage their feelings effectively.
