Caring for your child’s mental health

As a parent, your care and support play a vital role in nurturing your child's mental well-being. By being there for them, knowing how to guide them through their struggles, and encouraging professional help when needed, you can create a supportive environment for their mental health and well-being.

Guiding your child to reach out for support

When poor mental health seems persistent and affects your child’s everyday life, it is important to seek help from a school counsellor or mental health professional. However, many parents may find it challenging to speak to their child about seeking help.

Likewise, many children and youths can find it challenging to speak to their parents about their struggles and may vary in their willingness to seek help from mental health professionals.

As you speak to your child, keep in mind that by simply listening and encouraging them to seek help, you are already a strong source of support for your child.

Where to seek help for your child

As every child’s mental health needs are different, it can be difficult to find out what your child’s specific needs are. Fortunately, you are not alone in this journey of supporting your child.

A supportive community of people and services is available to provide expertise in supporting your child's mental health.
