Social media refers to online sites or apps which allow users to participate openly, have conversations, build communities, and connect with one another.

Its ‘social’ nature comes from platforms providing opportunities for ‘live’ interactions with others, some of whom may be anonymous. Content that is generated as users publish information, share personal and professional data, and collaborate with each other online is referred to as ‘media’.
